Nepali Golden Milk is an organic blend of Nepalese turmeric root, ginger root, cinnamon bark and peppercorns.  Also known as a Golden Latte or Turmeric Latte, this infusion originated in India and is called Haldi Doodh.

Using ingredients that have been part of Ayurvedic medicine (the still-practiced Ancient Indian system of natural healing) since around 500 BCE, this blend of turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and black pepper is not only delicious, but also reduces pain and inflammation in the body, induces better sleep, and decreases depression.

Turmeric's presence is seen all throughout the region of Nepal.  It is used to dye garments and cloth.  Turmeric is also associated with the Lord Krishna.  During the pre-wedding Haldi Ritual, turmeric paste is applied to the engaged couple to cleanse and purify the skin.  Turmeric-dyed sashes are worn around the neck on wedding days throughout the region.  A custom called Ritual of Happiness, or Talambralu, is performed at the end of the wedding where the newly married couple shower each other with a mixture of rice, turmeric, saffron, and pearls.

Golden Milk is best enjoyed as a latte.  Prior to adding milk, heat one teaspoon of butter and let the tea ingredients awaken in a saucepan.  In Tibetan medicine, combining tea and butter is thought to give greater mind-body balance than either item individually.  Boiling on a stove top for at least ten minutes is the best way to release the full benefits of the turmeric and the sweetness of the ginger.  See Brewing Recommendations for recipes and brewing instructions, including a cold-brew option.
